Start Up Energy Transition Award
The Start Up Energy Transition Award is an international competition for start-ups and young companies worldwide who are working on ideas affecting global energy transition and climate change. In just three years, the award has received roughly 1300 applications from 88 countries. For 2020, we surpassed all goals and received 570 applications from 90 countries.
Applicants presented their projects in five different categories, all with the aim of clean energy promotion.
The fourth SET Award Ceremony will take place following the SET Tech Festival on March 24th, 2020.
On February 13, 2020 the finalists for this year’s SET Award have been nominated.
The SET 100 list will be announced by the end of February, 2020. Stay tuned!
A look back at our past awards:
SET Award 2019
SET Award 2019 honours five start-ups in the fields of climate protection and energy transition. The award-winning start-up companies prevailed in the final round of the SET Tech Festival on April 9th in Berlin, an event for start-ups, established energy companies and investors. More than 450 companies from 80 countries had applied, 15 of which made it to the final and presented their ideas.
The “Start Up Energy Transition (SET)” initiative has published the new Top 100 list (#SET100) of international start-ups of the energy transition. It contains the 100 best cleantech start-ups that applied for this year’s SET Award – the international award for innovative business models in the areas of energy transition and climate protection.
SET Award 2018
The SET Award 2018 welcomed hundreds of applications from over 68 countries, after being launched at the COP23 in Bonn, Germany. The start-ups proved that they have powerful ideas to address issues concerning blockchain, renewable energy, the internet of things, energy access and much more. The 2018 finalists and winners showcased innovations ranging from ion-membrane exchange solutions for clean energy generation, to greenhouse-based horticulture projects, to machine-learning mobility tracking apps.
SET Award 2017
The first-ever SET Award drew in over 500 applications from all around the world. Supported early on by prominent individuals such as Patricia Espinosa, Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC, the SET Award 2017 emphasized the growing international community of innovators seeking to contribute to the energy transition and prevent increasing climate change. The finalists and winners from the 2017 Award included those working on hydrogen logistics, peer-to-peer solar energy platforms, off-grid cold storage in Nigeria, and more.

No matter how far you go into the SET process, there is always a value-added for your start-up. Many of our start-ups have gone on to gain new investors, mentors and customers, received invitations to energy events around the world and won even more awards and recognition for their inspiring work.
