ionysis develops catalyst coated membranes (CCMs), the core component of hydrogen fuel cells and electrolysers. These electrochemical converters are crucial for the transition towards a low-emission economy as they allow to decarbonize the hard-to-abate sectors of transportation and Industry through green hydrogen. In contrast to the state of the art, ionysis renounces perfluorinated sulfonic acids (PFSA) and uses hydrocarbon (HC) materials instead. HC materials has several benefits: (i) Enables higher operating temperature that allow more efficient system designs ; (ii) symplyfies recycling to reuse precious metals; (iii) avoids regulatory and environmental risk, as PFSA (within PFAS-material class) is toxicity and harms the environmental. Since starting operation in 2022, ionysis secured development contracts with a total volumn beyond 1Mio€ and is currently setting up a pilot production line. ionysis is a spin-off from Freiburg University and the Hahn-Schickard Research Institute in Freiburg and supported by two german SME as strategic investors.
